STIGMA and fear of their children being taken away are barriers deterring Koori families from accessing alcohol and drug (AOD) services in the region.
Raelene Stephens has been managing the AOD programs through Mallee District Aboriginal Service for eight years and said community members regularly told clinicians there was reluctance to approach the services out of fear.
“Parents are afraid that their kids will be taken away if they admit to using drugs or have a problem with alcohol,” Ms Stephens said.
