Victorian election 2018 Mildura: Small-town talk rules in Birchip

ASKED by a voter whether his job would become easier if he were re-elected with a narrower margin, Member for Mildura Peter Crisp suggested Shepparton’s $600 million State Government bonanza wasn’t as good as it looked.

Mr Crisp said “there are a lot of issues with marginal seats” and warned that, of the much-vaunted funding earmarked for Shepparton under its independent MP Suzanna Sheed, “$300 million of that is almost in the never-never” of extended budgets.

The question was put to Mr Crisp at a forum in Birchip on Thursday night, where southern Mallee voters tested candidates on their plans to attract and keep residents in small towns where the Mallee meets the Wimmera.

Before the candidates were even given the floor, organiser Dan McLoughlan made it clear the neighbouring marginal electorate of Ripon “is the one we are all jealous of”.
