SLEEPING on a bus, then driving more than 150km to play in a football carnival isn’t the perfect preparation, but it’s what Mallee Tigers did on the weekend to compete in the VACSAL/AFL Victoria Statewide Koorie Women’s Football Carnival at John Nichols Reserve.

With minimal funding, the local team was forced to spend the night in Bendigo and, instead of booking accommodation, slept in swags and on the team bus before packing up and heading to Melbourne for the two-day carnival.

Even more surprising was the way they performed against some of the best indigenous women footballers in the state.
