ONE hundred years ago at 11am on November 11, 1918, four bloody years of brutal conflict came to an end when the guns fell silent on the Western Front.
With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed the Armistice of Compiègne, paving the way for the signing of a formal peace treaty, the Treaty of Versailles, and the end of the war six months later.
Almost 62,000 Australians died fighting for our freedom and in service of our nation.
