FORMER Merbein and AFL footballer Colin Sylvia has been remembered a champion on and off the field.

More than 1000 mourners gathered today to pay their respects following the death of the 32-year-old who was killed in a car accident at Irymple on October 28.

Sylvia was taken at No.3 in the 2003 National Draft and went on to play 157 games at Melbourne and a further six with Fremantle before returning to his roots to take the field back at Merbein.

His funeral this morning was told Sylvia had a heart of gold and would do anything for a friend in need.

Representatives from football clubs across the region were among those to attend the funeral, including those from Merbein and Meringur Football Clubs where he spent the latter part of his football career.

Former Melbourne team-mates, including 166-AFL game veteran Brent Maloney and former captain Nathan Jones, were also among the mourners.
