THE atmosphere was buzzing around the judges tasting wine ­entries at the Australian Altern­ative Varieties Wine Show yesterday.

With 805 entries, including 101 grape varieties from across Aust­ralia, stewards were kept busy pouring wine and sorting bottles, with chief of judges Jane Faulkner ensuring a smooth process.

The Melbourne wine writer said the show gave non-mainstream wines, such as fiano and verment­ino, the chance to be pitted against other wines of their class.
