Farmer’s warning on global warming

A RETIRED fruit grower says the Federal Government showed a lack of leadership in its response to a special report on what it will take to contain rising global temperatures driven by climate change.

John Pettigrew, a former Goulburn Valley irrigator and ex-director of major fruit processor SPC, said the government’s refusal to accept scientific reports “makes adjustment for industries like horticulture more difficult”.

“You see more shade cloth, you see more irrigation use for cooling fruit, you see more sprays put on to protect against sunburn that you would never have seen in past years,” Mr Pettigrew said.
