La Trobe University said a recent failure to win a tender left it without enough funding to keep the Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems open in Mildura, when it announced its intention to shut the 22-year-old lab at the end of the year.
Previously known as the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre, the laboratory has produced groundbreaking research into riverine ecosystems and its scientists have gone on to establish findings critical to the future of the Murray-Darling, including an understanding of the importance of the Menindee Lakes to golden perch populations basin-wide.
