Sunraysia football: Grand final replay axed, extra-time introduced

Footballers and fans won't be coming back to City Oval a week later if the grand final is drawn.

Footballers and fans won't be coming back to City Oval a week later if the grand final is drawn.

EXTRA-time will decide this year’s Sunraysia Football Netball League (SFNL) grand final if teams are tied at full-time.

A rule change at the league’s annual general meeting this year has allowed for five minutes to be played either end in the case of a drawn grand final next Saturday.

In the past, only semi-final and preliminary finals allowed extra time to be played.

Under the new changes, teams will play five minutes either end. If scores are still locked together, another 10 minutes will be added.

SFNL executive officer Peter Walker said clubs were unanimous in the decision to change the rule.

“The old rule indicated that any drawn game during the finals series would result in extra-time being played except for the grand final,” Walker said.

“It was moved by one of our clubs in the middle of last year that the grand final should be included if this scenario occurred.

“It was put to all the clubs at the AGM and they were unanimous in their support of that, so any grand final that is a draw, we will play extra-time either end.

“It just made sense. We looked at the scenario if there was a draw in an under-18 game, that they would have to come back the next week and replay the match and it just didn’t make sense.

“Clubs organise their social calendars around the grand final and a replay makes it very difficult for them.”
