THE Victorian Government says a review of the state’s on-farm water efficiency program has backed its decision to stop funding any more works under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
The government called the review of its Victorian Farm Modernisation Project (VFMP) because of concerns the transfer of water entitlements by irrigators under the project was causing unintended negative impacts on communities.
Water Minister Lisa Neville said the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning report found it was not possible to fund further on-farm works that would transfer water to the Commonwealth without causing more socio-economic harm to irrigation communities.
