A TRUCK driver crashed into a line marker after taking his eyes off the road on a highway outside Mildura, a court has heard.
Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday heard the line marking operator was standing on the tray of the vehicle and avoided serious injury when a B-double struck his driver’s side on the Sturt Highway in April.
The court was told the collision happened after truck driver Jamie Rosenthal looked away from the road for 15 to 25 seconds as he searched for a fridge handle in the cabin of his truck after taking a drink.
Rosenthal, 34, of Loxton, pleaded guilty to careless driving.
His lawyer Gavan Tellefson said Rosenthal had driven more than one million kilometres since his last traffic offence.
The court heard Rosenthal’s immediate concern at the scene was for the wellbeing of the line marking operator.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt fined Rosenthal $1000 with conviction, telling him higher standards were expected of professional drivers.
