THE number of unwanted cats and kittens being dumped within Sunraysia is spiralling out of control and people need to take responsibility for their pet ownership, according to a local rescue organisation.

Janeen Treweek and Kerry Hawkes have run Mallee Cats for the past four years, rescuing unwanted felines from across the region and as far as Kerang.

They estimate they take in up to 500 per year and rehome them.
