ALDI is confident its first Mildura store will open by July next year, after the state planning umpire ruled the supermarket chain did not have to pay for a new pedestrian crossing at Fifteenth Street.
Mildura Council granted Aldi a planning permit for the former Crossroads Caravan Park site on the corner of Deakin Avenue and Fifteenth Street but the approval was dependent on Aldi footing the bill for a new pedestrian crossing.
Aldi appealed some of the permit’s conditions at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), which heard the council did not identify a need for a pedestrian crossing during its own internal engineering referral when Aldi’s application was being assessed.
