MILDURA ex-police officer Denis Ryan, who risked his career prospects by exposing child abuse and cover-ups by church and police about 50 years ago, is now receiving recognition.
Mr Ryan’s testimony influenced the Australian Government’s royal commission into child abuse, which did so much to ensure that Catholic offenders were chased up.
Of course, well over 90 per cent of abuse always happened – and still happens – in situations nothing to do with the church.
To seriously curb abuse would involve somehow eradicating the effects of broken marriages, alcohol, drug use, pornography, neglect of Bible teachings et cetera.
All of these have been consigned by councils, politicians, governments, media and academics to the too-hard basket.
