BLOCK banks upstream of Pooncarie will give families some time before they have to turn to potentially unreliable emergency bores for their water supply.
NSW Regional Water Minister Niall Blair signed off on the installation of two block banks at the weekend despite an initial recommendation from his department not to approve the works.
Nerida Healy, whose family lives on Court Nareen between Pooncarie and Menindee, said a conversation with senior departmental officials who visited the region late last month may have made them realise how critical the situation was.
