ATTRACTING specialist science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teachers to Mildura is difficult and more training in STEM advancement is needed, according to local secondary colleges.
Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham told the Australian Science Teachers Association this week it was “unacceptable that secondary school students are taught science or maths subjects by people without specialist skills”.
Mr Birmingham called for an increase in specialist STEM skilled teachers in Australian secondary schools and urged universities to reintroduce maths and science as admission prerequisites as well as English.
