LETTER: Mildura re-imagined without a train line

Looking to the future for Mildura it seems a bit silly to have a noisy freight train running all the way from Yelta through Merbein, Mildura, Irymple, Red Cliffs when the freight centre can be located just south of Red Cliffs.

Getting rid of the railway line would immediately change Sunraysia … no more rail crossings … no more noise … lots more parking at the hospital.

The real estate along Seventh Street would be ideal for an all-weather coach depot plus high-rise offices and rentable units, the train station could be replaced with a multi-storied building with shops on the lower floors a cabaret restaurant on the top floor with great views of the river.

If we ever have a passenger train return to Mildura then Red Cliffs would be the end of the line with an all-weather station.

With the rail crossings gone the lights and booms could be used further down the line.

There will be plenty of railway line available to build a really big freight yard south of Red Cliffs.
