Mildura losing pokies battle: Record smashed ... with a month to go

MILDURA gamblers have already lost a record amount on pokies this financial year – despite one month of reporting still to be added.

More than $25.74 million was put into machines in the Mildura municipality between last July and May, up 11 per cent on the same period 12 months earlier.

It’s the equivalent of $76,844 a day.

The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation figures show the region is facing its biggest yearly increase in 22 years.

It comes as demand for gamblers help services rose in the past six months, both for therapeutic counselling and financial counselling.
