NOEL Pound knew something wasn’t right at Mildura Base Hos­pital (MBH) as soon as the nurse opened her mouth.

Supporting his wife Cheryl as she battled secondary cancer, Mr Pound was no stranger to hospital wards and sensitive situations.

He had been a registered nurse for decades, spending time in the psychiatric ward at the old base hospital and in the new hospital as a casual once it opened its doors in 2000.

But he was instantly taken aback by the welcome he and Cheryl received upon her admission with pneumonia in 2014.
