Mildura Base Hospital: $1.2 million profit target: The price a private company puts on our public's health

RAMSAY Health Care’s yearly profit target of $1.2 million has seen the multinational company weigh Sunraysia’s health against its financial gain – and we’ve come off second best, according to Independent candidate for Mildura Ali Cupper.

Ms Cupper has taken aim at Mildura Base Hospital’s private management model and said the profit target is responsible for compromises on patient care and countless concerns about treatment.

Publicly available Statement of Priorities documents reveal Mildura Base Hospital’s profit target is $1.2 million, compared to the rest of the state’s public hospitals, which have an operating profit target of zero.

“In the state’s public hospitals, a profit goal of zero means every dollar of operational funding will be reinvested into the community’s healthcare,” Ms Cupper said.

“A business making a profit is fine, it’s what they exist to do.
