A SUBSTANTIAL reduction in the cost of solar panels is behind a surge in enthusiasm for big solar projects in Sunraysia and surrounds.
The region, known for both the quantity and quality of its sunshine, has had false starts with utility-scale solar projects.
A pilot power station at Carwarp, which utilised sun-tracking mirror dishes and was to eventually power some 35,000 homes across Sunrasyia, stalled in 2014.
Another project, the proposed Mallee Solar Park, failed to attract the funding it needed in 2012.
Now multiple players are progressing with plans to build solar farms of 100MW or more, while Mildura Council has given planning approval to eight projects worth more than $1.5 billion.
