“NO, not even water,” is a phrase Mildura’s Muttalip Eser is used to repeating constantly during the month of Ramadan.

As president of Mildura’s Turkish Islamic Society, Mr Eser said he understands why the general community is bewildered and full of questions when it comes to the practice of month-long fasting.

“Sometimes people think you’re crazy when you tell them you’re fasting for an entire month,” Mr Eser said.

“I understand their confusion – for some people, it’s an entirely new concept.

“But it’s good to ask questions, it helps build awareness of the practice and it’s a chance to explain to people what it’s all about.”
