Bumps on pregnancy path

THE number of Sunraysia women not receiving adequate care during pregnancy is “concerning”, according to a leading fertility expert.

Mildura Obstetrics and Gynaecology team leader Dr Kimberley Sleeman said while there has been an increase in community-based services recently, there were still a number of women presenting to hospital without having accessed appropriate care.

“At Mildura Base maternity unit we note a worrying trend of women presenting in labour who have had minimal or no antenatal care,” said Dr Sleeman, who has been practising in Mildura since 2005.

“Good antenatal care, ideally with a combined team of midwives and doctors, ensures safety for both mother and baby.
