MILDURA Mayor Mark Eckel says the council is taking a stronger stance on water issues but has reserved its position on whether an extra 450 gigalitres of water should be returned to the environment under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

Cr Eckel, Cr Anthony Cirillo and Cr Jason Modica met with the South Australian Royal Commission into the Murray-Darling Basin yesterday, ahead of the inquiry’s public hearing at the Grand Hotel this morning.

The royal commission was also due to hear evidence from lower Darling farmers during its visit to Sunraysia and yesterday met local irrigators and visited the Hattah Lakes.
