EVEN $1.5 billion is unlikely to be enough to recover 450GL of additional water for the environment under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, a Nationals MP says.
Member for Murray Austin Evans, whose electorate spans the NSW side of Sunraysia and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, has cast doubt on whether the extra water recovery included within the basin plan would be possible with the bucket of money set aside to do it.
“Water entitlement prices are jumping significantly,” Mr Evans said.
“We had the water auction at the Griffith Field Days recently and high security hit $5000/ML.”
The extra 450GL must come from on-farm or off-farm works to improve water efficiency and projects will have to be tested to ensure they do not leave communities worse off.
