A MOTORIST caught travelling almost 170km/h on the Sturt Highway told police he was running late for work.
The 21-year-old, who this week pleaded guilty in the Mildura Magistrates’ Court, won’t be driving for a year after what a magistrate described as a “blip”.
The court heard the man was clocked at 168km/h in a 110km/h zone at Meringur about 8.16am on March 5.
He admitted to speeding after police pulled him over but thought he was only travelling about 130km/h.
The man’s car was impounded for 30 days and his licence suspended, but he avoided a conviction after a magistrate read positive character references and heard he had an otherwise clean record.
The man was ordered to complete a safe driver awareness course and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.
“It’s a big blip for you because you’re going to lose your licence for 12 months,” Magistrate Pauline Spencer said.
