A SECTION of Mildura’s popular Park for Play will be out of action for at least the next month after it was demolished earlier this week to make way for a new main structure.

The demolition – which included tearing up the old soft fall rubber surfacing – was expected to be completed on Thursday to clear the area for the new playground and surface.

The work site has been barricaded to allow access to other areas of the park, situated in the Aerodrome Oval complex.

“Once we’ve cleared all this off, then they start to prep the pad and then they erect a new playground,” Surfacing Contractors Australia leading hand Craig Bolland said.

Last year, Mildura Council sought the community’s input on two design options for the new equipment, with a similar model to the former structure chosen.

The new structure will replace the ageing central structure from the original park, known as the “yabby” due to its shape.

The gated playground, which included all-abilities play equipment, was installed more than 10 years ago and the council said it had some structural issues and needed to be replaced.

Once completed, the new structure will have climbing walls, tunnels and activity areas with ramps and stairs for access.

Construction is expected to take four to six weeks.
