FRUIT growers in the Sunraysia region have been left in shock after it was announced the Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area industry development committee will be dismantled in December.
Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford on Wednesday said the decision came following a low turnout in a recent poll asking citrus, stone fruit and table grape growers if they supported the continuation of the committee for another four years.
"Without clear industry support, I am not satisfied that making an order that imposes compulsory charges on growers is the right decision for the region," she said.
About one quarter of eligible growers voted, with 242 votes in favour of the proposal out of the 321 counted.
Turnout was consistently low across both Victoria and New South Wales, and across the citrus, stone fruit and table grape industries.
