Federal Government's school chaplains ‘a waste’

THE Federal Government's $247 million school chaplaincy program has been labelled a waste of money by NSW Teachers Federation regional organiser Brett Bertalli who says Sunraysia schools are in desperate need of qualified counsellors.

The program, announced as part of this week's 2018-19 Federal Budget, will place 3000 chaplains in schools across the next four years.

However Mr Bertalli said the funding was misdirected.

"A school counsellor has a ratio of 1500 students for every one counsellor," Mr Bertalli said.

"Right across from Balranald and Pomona to Coomealla and Gol Gol there is one counsellor that roams from school to school, sitting down with parents and students and diagnosing student needs while counselling students at the same time."
