Ashley Whitehouse was keen to get a win on the board in the Opens in 2018 and did so with a runaway victory by nine shots at the weekend.
Whitehouse’s opening round of 74 saw him go to sleep on Saturday night with a three-shot lead over Andrew Stewart on 77 with Brendan Dean, Troy Germain and Cameron Stewart all next best on 79 with the hope of chasing down the five-shot deficit on day two at Red Cliffs.
That didn’t happen, and the class of Whitehouse saw him extend his lead by shooting a par-72 to create a nine-shot gap from runners-up Mark Hann, whose rounds of 80 and 75 saw him pip Stewart (79-76) in a countback.
Next best were Brendan Rowse (81-75) and Dean (79-80).
