A MILDURA couple has called on local retailers to take more responsibility in alerting people to scams, after they fell prey to an operation that fleeced them of $6500 by tricking them into buying Apple iTunes gift cards.
Ross and Marie* said they are angry and embarrassed and are speaking up in the hope others can avoid their pain.
Almost two weeks ago, Ross received a phone call on the couple’s landline from “John” who claimed to be from Telstra.
Ross was initially suspicious, but said the man gave him a reference number, employee number, and a phone number.
