Councillors argue the importance of voicing opinions in public: Defending free speech

MILDURA councillors have defended their rights to speak publicly after one councillor was asked to retract his comments about the handling of a planning application.

Cr Anthony Cirillo is understood to have attracted the ire of chief executive Gerard Jose over comments published in Sunraysia Daily on March 22, when he called on the council to take “action” in response to its failure to advertise a planning application which led to the council losing a case at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Mr Jose yesterday said “any concerns I have regarding comments attributed to Cr Anthony about staff in the (Sunraysia Daily) on the 22nd have been addressed internally by the mayor with the individual councillor – as is appropriate.”
