Heatwaves a sign of times

THIS week’s unprecedented searing April heat is reflective of trends observed worldwide as greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere increase, a Bureau of Meteorology climatologist says.

Mildura, Ouyen and Walpeup all experienced four straight days above 35C this week, an April record for Victoria. Nowhere in the state had previously recorded more than two April days above 35C.

The run of hot weather included a top of 39.3C on Tuesday – the highest April maximum temperature recorded in Victoria, a record matched at Hopetoun in the northern Mallee a day later.
