A HEROIN addict who has struggled to kick a 10-year addiction has asked to remain behind bars so he can try to stay clean.
The 24-year-old Mildura man pleaded guilty in the Mildura Magistrates’ Court to a burglary charge yesterday.
The court heard he and another person broke into a shed on Olive Avenue on the morning of February 13, just days after he had been released on bail.
The man’s lawyer, Rebecca Boreham, said he began using heroin at 14 and was “incredibly remorseful” about his behaviour while on the drug.
Ms Boreham said the man wanted a jail sentence because it would be easier to access an opiate replacement program to kick his drug habit than it would on the outside.
“It’s a bit of an indictment, isn’t it?” Magistrate Andrew Capell said, before sentencing him to a three-month prison term.
