Concerned residents Sue Burke and Bob Fleiner, along with bird photographer Lindsay Cupper raised their concerns over duck shooting being allowed at Brickworks Billabong at Merbein Common.

THE Brickworks Billabong at Merbein Common has been closed for the duration of the 2018 duck shooting season in what has been described as a “small win” for concerned residents.

An updated list of closed hunting areas was published on the Game Management Authority (GMA) wesbite on Tuesday, noting the closure of Brickworks Billabong for the upcoming season by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning due to ongoing land classification issues.

A GMA spokesman confirmed the approved areas for duck hunting this season in the region were Lake Hawthorn and other parts of the Merbein Common, including the Cowanna Billabong, Horseshoe Billabong and Irymple Basin.
