ALMOST 50 people from far west NSW have so far been employed on the controversial Wentworth to Broken Hill pipeline build.

A work camp about 100km north of Wentworth will be operational this month, with another camp about 40km south of Broken Hill expected to be ready shortly after.

The John Holland and MPC Group joint venture team expects to construct the pipeline at a rate of up to 2km a day, with 22,000 steel pipes to be laid along the 270km Silver City Highway.
