MOVES to replace V/Line’s ageing long-haul train fleet have been described as solving a piece in the puzzle of returning passenger rail to Mildura, but key pieces are still to fall into place.
The Victorian Opposition last week made a $633 million commitment to order new trains on the state’s long-haul routes, though Mildura would not be included as part of the initial order.
A State Government spokeswoman said money for the design work for long-haul trains was already committed.
Public transport expert Professor Bill Russell said these moves would answer the question of what trains would be used on a possible reinstated Mildura service.
