Jail for assault over dog’s food

A MAN bashed his housemate with a tin of cat food after a dispute about what his dog was given to eat, a court has heard.

Bradley John Knowles, 31, was sentenced to two months’ jail and placed on a 12-month community corrections order yesterday after pleading guilty to recklessly causing injury.

The Mildura Magistrates’ Court heard Knowles got so angry his dog had been given cat food that he repeatedly struck his housemate in the head with the tin.

The pair then started wrestling and the victim was pushed into a window, which broke. The incident happened in the victim’s bedroom at the Ouyen home shared by the two men.

Knowles’ lawyer Hugh Middleton said his client had struggled with alcohol for a long time and regretted what he had done.

“(Alcohol) has been a bane in your life, it has cost you a lot,” magistrate Nunzio La Rosa said.

Knowles was ordered to complete 75 hours’ community work as part of his corrections order and undergo counselling for alcohol abuse and anger.
