Backpackers count

SEASONAL harvest labour shortage may not be imminent in Sunraysia but the very high turnover is threatening local farmers who rely on overseas backpackers to pick fruit and vegetables.

That is the view of MADEC harvest labour services manager Scott Cameron, whose main concern is the changing face of overseas backpackers who appear to be younger, less willing to work outdoors and fear exploitation.

“If this trend continues the farmers that rely on backpackers will find it more difficult to attract enough suitable labour,” he said.
