Freight gets back on the rails

THE first freight train to leave Merbein in seven months departed yesterday with the reopening of the ­Mildura line as part of the $440 million Murray Basin Rail Project.

Stage two of the works has standardised the train line and increased its axle loading from 19 to 21 tonnes, which will ­enable trains to carry more freight.

The Wakefield Transport Group train carrying wine and table grapes left Merbein for Port Melbourne using the ­recently reopened Mary­borough to Ararat Line.
