MILDURA firefighters have kept the spotlight on mental health by building a reflective memorial garden to honour two colleagues who took their own lives.

Firefighters from the Mildura CFA took it upon themselves to revamp an unused patch of land at the back of the station into a place to honour Nathan Shanahan and Damien Burke.

The Shanahan and Burke families were at Mildura CFA for the dedication of the garden, which is complete with two magnolia trees and memorial plaques.

John Shanahan, Nathan’s father, said it was an emotional day.
