Grain’s dire straits

A CHALLENGING year for Mallee grain growers has been reflected in a forecast for state-wide winter crop production to fall by nearly a third.

The latest Australian crop report for the 2017-18 season was released this week by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).

Total winter crop production in Victoria was forecast to fall by 32 per cent to around 7 million tonnes, reflecting a fall in average yields following the exceptional yields of 2016–17.
