Demand rise hits charities

THE Salvation Army and Vinnies have noticed a surge in demand for people needing help with bills and food.

Salvation Army Mildura captain David Davis said the organisation had seen a surge in people needing help to manage their bills.

The organisation offers one-on-one counselling to show people how they can manage their spending but said that service was booked out and had to turn away twice as many people as it could help.

Mr Davis said while utility companies offered bill concessions, they often weren’t suited to Mildura.
