‘Slave’ wages with crowding in our backyard

MODERN slavery in the Sunraysia region has two common themes. One is the exploitation of migrant workers at the hands of labour hire contractors who are, in some cases, making up to $100,000 per month off the back of other people’s work.

The second is these same migrant workers being crammed into illegal accommodation with dozens of others and being charged $100 per head to stay there.

At the centre of the issue in Sunraysia is the town of Robinvale, which has been a horticulture hub since the 1990s.
