VIDEOS featuring terrified cyclists trying to outrun swooping magpies are guaranteed to draw a laugh or two.

However Melbourne’s Royal Vic­torian Eye and Ear Hospital is warning about the very real dangers of attacking magpies, with damage from the swooping birds resulting in serious eye injuries in recent weeks.

This year alone there have been 3335 magpie attacks recorded across the country, with 724 of those in Victoria.
