AN INDEPENDENT candidate contesting the weekend’s Murray by-election says he walked away from the National Party because they failed to support his central policy on water.
Peter Robinson, of Deniliquin, decided to leave the Nationals and run as an independent candidate after a battle to get the party to call for a federal evaluation of barrages near the Murray Mouth in South Australia.
He said the policy was unanimously supported at the NSW Nationals’ state conference in Broken Hill but “appeared to disappear when it went up the chain”.
