A GRASS fire which started in Irymple yesterday came just metres from threatening nearby homes.
It took 20 firefighters only minutes to bring the three acre blaze under control after it ignited in a vacant block of land near the intersection of Ginquam Avenue and the Calder Highway about 1.30pm.
Mildura Fire Brigade station officer Mick Sporton said crews contained the blaze before it spread to nearby properties.
“We took some trucks straight around to protect (the houses),” he said.
