Sugar issue hits playfields

THESE days it’s not uncommon to see young athletes guzzling down so-called “healthy” sports drinks on Sunraysia sporting grounds.

Which is why council’s across Victoria are being urged to apply for a share of up to $540,000 of funding to reduce the sale of sugary drinks at council-owned sports and recreation facilities.

Under the VicHealth water in sports grant, council’s will be required to have a dedicated project manager and implement council policies and practices that support longer-term change.

Sunraysia Cricket Association president Bill Sauer said sugary drinks were now commonplace on the cricket ground.
