SPENDING most of the 2017 football season holidaying in the United States might have been just what new Merbein coach Jarrod Buckley needed.

The 26-year-old key defender, who will take over as coach of the Magpies following Peter Johns’ departure, returned to his junior club in 2016 following a stint in South Australia but travelled for much of this year and only played the team’s final two games of the SFNL season.

“It gave my body a rest, every year I’ve been sore,” Buckley said about the trip.

“I’ve been lucky with injuries but you get really sore legs and back and that.”

But the time spent away from football also refreshed Buckley and made him realise, in a sense, what football meant to him.
