Ban bag would need support

COUNCILLOR for environment and sustainability Anthony Cirillo says Mildura Council would lobby the State Government to ban plastic bags if there was local support for the move.

Cr Cirillo said feedback from residents would also determine whether council would follow the lead of Darebin and Surf Coast councils in passing a motion to reduce plastic use at the local level.

The plastic bag ban debate reignited last week after Western Australia announced it would join South Australia, the Northern Territory, Tasmania, Queensland and the ACT in moving to ban single-use plastic shopping bags next year.
